CD Review – Alabama Thunderpussy

Open Fire

Relapse Records

Moonshine Metal, delivered in a glass jug straight from Hillbilly Hell, strong as hell but goes down smooth. Same goes for the eighth release from Richmond, Virginia based rockers Alabama Thunderpussy.

Raw and gritty production, courtesy of Ian Whalen help mold the bands signature brand of country-fried hard rock, into their best effort yet. Formed in 1996, the band has recently undergone a singer switch –up with Kyle Thomas taking over the vocal duties.

Bringing that southern rock feel back to the forefront, ATP have been dealt a royal flush as apparent on opening track “The Cleansing”, sounding like a deranged version of The Four Horsemen or Raging Slab. Nothing wrong with that, a few fast and furious tracks should keep the live shows filled with head-bobbing hicks. Good ‘ol boys jokes aside, ATP have certainly captured the true essence of “Real” Rock N’ Roll.

Latest single, “Words of The Dying Man” is a slight throwback to maybe an old Salty Dog track. “None Shall Return” has Judas Priest’s “Electric Eye” smeared all over the first eight bars. Think Black Sabbath: Fairies Wear “Cowboy” Boots while kicking the ever-lovin’ crap out of The Black Crowes in a comfortable calm fashion.

Kiss my grits.
